Laundry On Sundaes

Every beginning is only a sequel, after all, and the book of events is always open halfway through.

Plaj is apparently SF’s only Scandinavian restaurant and another one of the places that Yufei’s been to with his friends and that I’d been bugging him to take me. I had never had Scandinavian food before (Swedish meatballs from IKEA doesn’t count…) and I was pretty excited.

We started with some rye bread and butter.

We ordered 3 dishes to share. First up was the smoked halibut & salmon fritters with dill aioli.

It was really good! Crispy on the outside and soft and flavorful on the inside, and the aioli was perfect.

Next we had Swedish meatballs with potato puree, pan gravy, lingonberry, and pickled cucumber.

Solid dish. I would have ordered something more adventurous but Yufei insisted on meatballs.

Lastly, we had the braised ox cheek with parsnip puree, pear, and chard.

Another fantastic dish. The meat was so tender it literally melts in your mouth.

We decided to go for dessert too since the savory dishes were pretty small. Yufei got the chocolate kladdkaka (a brownie-like cake) with vanilla cream and house-made hazelnut ice cream.

I got the spiced apple pie with granola crust and house-made vanilla ice cream.

Both desserts were good.. I probably should have gone with something a little more exotic than apple pie though, in hindsight. We also had some cocktails with our dinner and they were great as well. Overall an excellent dinner and an interesting new experience!
