Laundry On Sundaes

Every beginning is only a sequel, after all, and the book of events is always open halfway through.

Yufei and I attended the annual Twitter holiday party the week before Christmas and it was a ton of fun! This year, the party took place at the San Francisco City Hall, which I had always found beautiful from the outside but had never been inside. Well, it was just as gorgeous inside!

Twitter really went all out this year; they had a string quartet in the main hall, a live band and dance floor in one of the side rooms, and a DJ in the other. This gorgeous tree was on the second level:

Lots of drink stations with open bar as usual, and the food was wonderful (here is Yufei at the “savory pies of the world” station). They also had hand-rolled sushi, shrimp and oysters, Chinese steamed buns with an amazing filling (my favorite of the night), and tons of other food options.

Everything was so fabulous. The grand staircase and the crowds of partying people downstairs really reminded me of Gatsby’s parties.

Here’s a better look at my dress: a BCBG dress I rented on Rent the Runway. This is the second time I’ve used the service and I’m very happy with it. The dress was so beautiful and made me feel like a million bucks. The shoes and clutch are finds from Goodwill. (Also, you might note my curly hair – nope, not from a curling iron: I got a perm!)

Last year at the holiday party, there was a photobooth and a professional photographer. This year they had something different that I had actually been wanting to try out: a slow motion video booth! (You can see THE video that started the craze here.)

Basically it’s set up like a photo booth, with props and costumes, and they have this uber fancy video camera that can capture up to 6000 fps and they take a really short video of you, like 6 seconds, and turn it into this epic slo-mo video clip. It was so much fun that we went 3 times throughout the night! I will try to post one of the videos later :)

Last photo of the night: in front of the beautiful City Hall all lit up in Twitter blue.

What a wonderful night.

The night of my last final of my first quarter of dental school, Yufei took me out to dinner at Marlow to celebrate. The restaurant was pretty small and cozy, which was nice for a cold SF night.

We started out with the roasted bone marrow, which was delicious.

Yufei’s main course, the angus New York steak:

And mine, the pork chop:

I almost never order pork but this was really good! For dessert we got the TCHO chocolate cream pie and the upside down strawberry crisp, which came in these cute little jars.

We were super stuffed by the end of the meal. Everything was so yummy and it was the perfect way to celebrate the end of a tough quarter!

So here’s something I thought I’d never say: I joined a fraternity! To be more specific, I’m now a member of Delta Sigma Delta, the largest and oldest international professional dental fraternity. I learned very quickly that at UCSF, almost everyone joins one of the three frats on campus, not only for the social aspect but also because they offer a lot of academic help and support. So me and most of my close friends at UCSF joined Delts because they’re awesome.

We had our initiation dinner at L’Olivier about a month ago. It was so nice to see everyone dressed up all fancy after seeing them in scrubs all the time at school.

My Delts family! My big sib Jenny couldn’t make it that night, so here I am with my grand-big and great-grand-big, and my “cousin” (we share the same grand-big).

My extended family! It’s a pretty complicated family tree that I still haven’t quite figured out haha.

Notice Dr. Ho in the last photo. I talked about his absolutely amazing keynote speech at our white coat ceremony here, and I feel so proud and fortunate that Dr. Ho is a Delts member! Apparently everyone else also feels the same, which resulted in the photo below:

Dr. Ho with almost all the D1 Delts!

After dinner, a bunch of the D1’s went to the movies to see Catching Fire (which was awesome and so much better than the first movie). It was such a fun night!

Note: Yay I’m finally done my first quarter of dental school! Now hopefully I will be able to catch up on all the posts I didn’t have time to write in the past couple of months.

So I turned 24 a bit more than a month ago (a.k.a. the time when we still had time to go out and weren’t buried in exams) and I got to celebrate with old friends and new. We went to Wish Bar & Lounge and had a great time.

We reserved a table for 16 people but what we got was definitely not enough. We did amass some more chair over the night so we mostly all had a seat. It was pretty crowded and loud on a Saturday night. The drinks were really yummy though! My favorite was the Afternoon Tea, which was made from St. Germain elderflower liqueur, fresh lemon juice, and champagne.

Some of us went to Bootie at DNA Lounge afterwards, which is always fun. Thanks to all of my friends who came out for a great night!
